What Should a Ferret Eat?

Ferrets are often erroneously categorized as one of the rodent family. Unlike rodents, ferrets are carnivorous. A common choice of food by ferret owners is fresh meat. Most of the time, ferrets likes chicken than beef. Actually, any fresh meat should do but make sure that it’s free of toxins, parasites and bacteria.

Advertised dry ferret food can be an alternative. It’s very substantial to examine the brand to confirm that it includes 15% fat, 3% low in fiber and at least 35% protein from meat sources. Small amount of cat foods for couple of days can also be eaten by ferrets. But the ingredients, fat levels and protein, are not perfectly equalized for ferrets. Most ferrets like bananas, raisins and sweets. Little something of these treats can be sometimes given in few amounts before you give them something more. If their diet is not balanced, it can lead to health problems and upset stomach.

Ferrets are very inquisitive and brilliant on searching for food or things that are not really food once you let them out of their cages. They have the ability to eat more than what is right for them. You’ll be amazed to see them trying to open the door of your refrigerator using their sharp claws to tear its rubber seal. Additionally, they’re good climbers, fast and active. If you don’t give them much attention while they are out of their cage, you might be surprised to see them inside the dryer, the fridge or even at the stove once you open it.

It is also advisable to have some vitamin supplements and mineral stored at home. Although most pet foods already have supplements, ferrets may need added ingredients. Supplements can be helpful because they’re sensitive and most likely to have certain bone deformations and adrenal ailments.
