Training your Ferret

Training your Ferret

Training a pet can be very enjoyable because they can perform different activities, taught not to bite and can be litter trained. You just have to know the right technique, enough time and long patience to see great result. Ferrets are unique kind of animal that can be trained even though they are domestic, less eager to please and not as socialized like dogs.

Centuries ago, ferrets were taught to chase mice and rabbits to get rid of rodents from places where food was kept particularly grains. Because ferrets are meat eaters and can get themselves to narrow places, they have successfully accomplished the job.

Nowadays, ferrets have been taught to in setting up computer and telecommunications facilities and strand cables and wires through passage on jets. The key to train your ferret is to learn how they work naturally. A good example is litter training.

Ferret loves playing inside a litter box filled with pellet or paper and they like to dig a nose under the pellets. All you have to do is to patiently wait until they show signs that they are prepared to be moved into the litter box. Be reminded to take their water and food supply far away from where they play.

You can give your ferret’s food treats while training them. Just be sure that you don’t compromise their health. A toy which can strongly stand up is good for them because ferrets have sharp claws and teeth and they love to scratch and chew. Don’t give them any toys that can be easily broken into tiny pieces and soft rubber toys. Ordinary plastics and Styrofoam are dangerous to ferrets. You must know that ferrets’ respiratory system is very sensitive. Inhaling small granules or fibers can cause infection so avoid using something that creates small dust-like particles.

Ferrets simply enjoy playing and exploring. Keep in mind that while training your ferret, shouting at them or hurting them will only make them feel afraid. Patience is a virtue. Training a ferret may not be that easy, but it will give you a rewarding feeling once you have seen the positive result of your hard work.
