How to Choose the Right Ferret? How to Choose the Right Ferret? To be able to choose a ferret, you should have an emotional attachment. You can look at few objective factors that will help you to choose the right ferret. First, you have to consider the ferret’s age. Younger ferrets have not yet formed any particular attachments. Training the younger ferrets is challenging and requires much more effort patience and a lot of care. They will need lots of attention, vaccinations and litter training. On the other hand, the older ferrets are already trained not to bite and taught how to use a litter box. This may be favorable if you don’t have much time to train a ferret. You must also know that if ferrets don’t have any social outlet they can be bored. Once they feel bored they can become unhappy and unruly. Ferrets like bonding with other animals, other ferrets or with human. Don’t just leave them alone with their own devices. However, there are some exclusions. Non-neutured, older male ferrets will habitually turn into rampant characteristics. They may seek to detach themselves from other non-neutered male ferrets and show an attitude what is known as ‘same sex exclusivity’. So consider owning more than one ferret at home. This brings us to the second consideration; should you neuter or spay your ferret? It’s best to leave that to the experts not unless you are an experienced ferret breeder. It is very hard to breed ferrets. It needs extensive knowledge and can be expensive that can be a long-term goal. You can also consider the gender of the ferret. Males are around 3-5 pounds and about 18 inches. Usually, female ferrets are slightly smaller - with comparably lower weight and about 15 inches. Ferrets of both sexes get along fine once they are spayed or neutered. Occurrence of ailment is about similar in the two spayed females and neutered males. But non-spayed female ferrets will most likely need special concerns. From March to August they come into heat. They can stay in heat for as long as six months if they don’t mate. As a result of raised levels of hormones, female ferrets can also be affected from the common higher occurrence of tumors. Male ferrets also have their own danger regarding this. Considerations about individual personality and color are entirely personal choices. Be reminded that if you choose the albinos they do require for special care and attention. Similar to other albinos, they can experience problems in vision. The cats and dogs can attack them once they get loose because albinos are more easily preyed. Once you are able to properly learn how to take care of your ferret, you will realize why these funny and friendly animals turned into an adored domestic pet.
