Ferret Watering and Feeding Equipment

Ferrets acquire really huge metabolisms. That’s why they must be able to get to food anytime. Ferret’s digestive systems works very fast and they will easily digest the foods they’ve eaten for couple of hours.

Due to that fact, in order for them to stay healthy, they need to drink lots of water.
Although they sleep for 18 long hours a day, ferrets are very active once they wake up. Their natural characteristic of move things around and being exploratory makes them splash and spill water, hide a food or dig it out, or tip a bowl over. If you have the proper equipment you can lessen these kinds of mess. The good news is there are many options that are available in the market nowadays.

Feeding mechanism and water dispenser come in different designs in different prices. You must choose a bowl that is heavy so it won’t easily tip over, unbreakable and made of a material that the ferret can’t break using its teeth. Also, it must be not too difficult to clean, doesn’t get rusty and non-toxic. The best bowl should be made of stone, you just have to be patient in finding one.

Another good option is automatic feeders which are commonly made of plastic. A perfect feeder must minimize the spreading of food, must be able to give food for several days and can be attached at the side of the cage so that it won’t easily be knocked over.

Like the food dispenser, the water dispenser for the ferret should not be easy to tip over. The most commonly used is a low crock, heavy bowl that has a rubber bottom so that it won’t make scratches on the floor. This is placed outside the cage. Just make sure that the ferret won’t chew the rubber. Other water dispenser has small portions for allocating liquid vitamin supplements or carbon filtration. There is also a ball-and-tube style of water dispenser. Wherein the ferrets will push the ball in order for them to drink water, then the ball will go back down to lock the tube.

No matter how expensive the water and food dispenser you bought, you must be responsible and always keep it thoroughly cleaned at least once every seven days. If you use porcelain or glass dispensers use only mild chlorine bleach every now and then, be sure to wash it off well. Remember that chlorine residue can be harmful to the health of your ferret.
