Ferret, the New Household Pet

Do you want to be different with your friend who owns cats and dogs as their pet? You now have an alternative. There’s the new household pet called ferret. Its name was derived from a Latin word furonem which means a thief. Ferret, the new household pet is somewhat similar to cats. Ferrets are companionable, trainable and inquisitive. The new household friend always wants to socialize with other pets or mostly with humans.


The male ferret is usually 2.5 pounds and around 18 inches, while the female ferret is smaller. Ferret, the new household pet comes in different colors. Some are white, others are brown and some are black. Ferrets don’t encounter problems feeding themselves on winter because they are naturally food thieves. They also steal small objects or toys and hide them in some place. This behavior of ferrets is similar to other small mammals and squirrels.

The ferret has been trained pets for almost 2,500 years. Our new household pet is a family of 65 various breeds which includes weasels, mink, ermine, otters and badgers. As a matter of fact, in middle ages, ferrets were admired by royalty.

People have a common misconception on ferrets. They say that ferrets have bad smell; well they just bring out a musky natural smell that comes from their scent glands. But actually, ferrets just smell bad if they are not properly taken cared. Ferret’s scent glands are usually isolated by the sellers of the new household pet. Most of the ferret owner and pet shop owners usually put number of ferrets together on one cage with water and food and set it aside for few days. They don’t know that ferret requires more care in order to keep them healthy and odor free.
